W.A. Farm Ltd. is owned and operated by Tony, Wanda and Ryan Van de Brand, descendants of Dutch immigrant dairy farmers. Since purchasing the farm in 1986, they successfully developed a niche market hog operation, adhering to high standards such as no antibiotics and California’s Proposition 12 regulations. Over the years, the farm has raised up to 350 hogs, grazed cattle and grown various crops, including feed corn, barley, oats and forage across 390 acres of farmed land.
The Van de Brand family implements a comprehensive nutrient management plan that efficiently uses all manure on the farm, alongside practicing minimum tillage to maintain soil health. Their motivation to participate in the Living Lab program stems from a strong desire for self-sufficiency, cost reduction and efficiency, as well as a commitment to keeping their land healthy and pristine. Efforts like fencing waterways contribute to these goals. Ryan plays an active role as the president of the New Brunswick Soil and Crop Improvement Association, while Tony has been a longtime member of the Porc NB Pork board of directors. As the family plans to transition out of pork production, they are focused on continuing to grow crops and market their corn.
